A sign’s design, colors, typography and precise spacing of letters are all most prominent key factors for a classic design, but the selection of right size is the first and probably the most important one because it is the step from where the entire process begins.

So, in this article, you will be getting some quick guide about different sizes for signage. However, for a better understanding of signage, we need to know about the fundamental types of signage first, which is external and external:

The Fundamentals of External Signage and Internal Signage

External signage is seen outside. These signs can be utilized as a business promoting boards, markers, or instructive use. These signs may either be announcements for promotions, or medium-sized boards for demonstrating a shop or an organization’s name or as instructional billboards.

The benefit of external signage sheets is that it effectively grabs the eye of the audience, which can positively result by boosting the sale for a company or clientele.

Internal signboards, on the other hand, are those which are put inside a spot. Like external billboards, these too can be utilized for promoting offers or illuminating something to the general population who cross it. The upside of using internal advertisement signage is that it further fortifies or urges individuals to think about whatever offer, organization, or business is publicized on the board.

Signage Sizing Depends on Many Factors

Now that we know the fundamental of signage, we must get into the sizing guide for signage. However, the selection of the right size also depends on many factors, including the amount of information you need on the sign, the distance of viewers, and the height. The sizing also depends on the location and the purpose. So, we are going to share some guidance about different sizes for signage according to different factors.

Billboards

Billboards cover big dimensions and area, hence are appropriate for advertising purposes. They can measure even up to 10 feet, depending on the type of billboard. For instance, a skyscraper billboard will cover a lot of space and is placed in a highly busy metropolitan place. Most of the billboards you see are around 12 feet wide with varying height. For example, a fast-food chain’s drive-by signboard next to the highway, will need to be positioned considerably high, and the size will have to be pretty large.

Digital billboards have neon and LED in them and are more interesting than static billboards. However, with an overwhelming size range, these types of signs can be distracting for drivers on the road. That is why some countries have banned the use of this overly large signage.

Street Signs

Street signs are generally used for assisting passers-by and guiding them about the speed limit, directions, warnings, and caution signs so people can perceive the message right away by having a look at the signs. They are contingent upon the stature where you will put your signage. The standard size of these signs can be around 30 x 36 inches when mounted overhead, and 30 x 30 inches when post mounted.

These signs are usually moderate in size and do not mean to avert the attention of the driver. However, many businesses use commercial street signs, which are usually located at the site of their business. These are aimed to alert the passers-by of the commercial site such as for sale signs. 4×8 is considered a good size for a property on sale purpose while 4×4 is good if you just want to put your company name out on the street.

Posters

This signage type is most often used by the entertainment industry for the promotion of movies, albums, singles, theatrical performances, and festivals. The size of this category of signage has no defined range. Usually, posters come in A4 sizes and contain content in detail with attractive graphics. 24 x 36 inches is the standard size for one-sheet film posters.

Some posters like movie posters are meant to feature the main cast, so the size is adjusted accordingly, mainly about a door’s length. More text is added in smaller posters that demand the attention of the reader. The case is the opposite for posters that contain more graphic content. These posters are made larger to include all required graphical content.

You will need to keep in mind the angle of elevation as well while installing the signage, a sign placed at a higher level can be easily viewed from a distance.

Final Thoughts

Purpose of signage is to benefit a business. Therefore, its selection must be paid utmost attention, keeping in view all the necessary elements needed to make a sign appealing to the public, and selection of the right size is of the essence. So, pay attention to your message, location, and purpose when selecting a size for your signage.
